Fun Fact: Neurotransmitters!

Neurotransmitters are chemicals that transmit signals across a synapse. Another way to phrase it is, neurotransmitters are chemicals in your brain that communicate information throughout our mind and body. The brain releases neurotransmitters to help your body function correctly, it tells your lungs to breathe and your heart to beat. They also affect other things in your body like mood, sleep, weight and concentration and they can cause symptoms when they are off balance. There are two types of neurotransmitters inhibitory and excitatory. Inhibitory transmitters calm the brain and keep the excitatory transmitters balanced. And excitatory transmitters are what stimulate the brain.

Some of the well-known neurotransmitters are serotonin, dopamine, acetylcholine.
  • Serotonin is an inhibitory transmitter, it is necessary for a stable mood. It is thought to be a contributor to the feeling of well-being or happiness but it does many other things for your body such as your sleep cycle, pain control, and carbohydrate craving.
  • Dopamine is both excitatory and inhibitory, it is our main focus transmitter. When dopamine is low it can cause daydreaming or forgetting where something is. It is responsible for our drive and focus to get things done. It is also known for lust, passion, and love.
  • Acetylcholine is a excitatory transmitter, it is primarily involved with thought, dreaming, and memory.
